Gaia - X is an European Project developed in order to create an European Data Infrastructure. It was an initiative launched by Germany and France in 2019, which has since the last Summer a non-profit association established in Brussels.
Supported at same time by public and private investments, there are three main reasons for this Project, which are accordingly to the official information the following: data sovereignty (cloud offerings are at this moment dominated by non-European providers and Europe wants to ensure the establishment and maintenance of the European data in a permanent way, escaping from growing international tensions and trade conflicts); data availability (which means that Europe needs a trustworthy, secure and transparent data infrastructure in order to exchange and process data, supporting the economies of scale); and innovation (this is developing a digital ecosystem that allows and helps European companies and business models to scale up and be globally competitive).
In practice, and by essence, the idea is to create a standardized and interoperable European infrastructure, safe and reliable, of technology and data, and foster the digital sovereignty of an European service of cloud.
And...Why Gaia?
Gaia is the Greek earth goddess. She is the mother of Uranus (the sky), of Pontus (the sea) and of Ourea (the mountains), giving rise to living beings. She is the mother of all gods and creator of the planet.
Although born of Chaos, she ordered the Cosmos, put an end in the disorder and destruction by creating harmony. In the context of this project, the disorder idea should refer to the defended need to regulate and structure the digital world, creating harmonization of systems, technologies and norms, especially nowadays with the technological acceleration, accentuated by the covid-19 pandemic.
Hence, following its symbology, we could believe that Gaia as an European project aims to give rise to a new way of life (and please look to the official logo of Gaia-X that seems to be a tree of life), involving the digitalization of European society as a whole, which, for sure, will eventually be related to the 5G network.
Meaningful to the economy as a whole - it corresponds to an essential resource for economic growth -, Gaia-X will guarantee security and maintain sovereignty over the data area, and enable to make decisions that will remain innovative and competitive with the changing of times, creating jobs and overall progress.
